Pontikonisi Island
Pontikonissi Island
Greece, Corfu
Pontikonisi is a small island surrounded by greenery, which rises only 2 meters above the water and lies directly opposite the airport runway, 800 meters from the city. The only building on it is the Byzantine church of the 11th-12th centuries, built in honor of Pantokrator. The white-stone staircase of the monastery from afar looks like a mouse's tail, which gave the island the name "mouse". The most popular legend is that this is actually the ship of Odysseus, turned by the god of the seas Poseidon into a rock during a storm.
