Kaiser Bridge
Kaiser's Bridge, Kaiser's Bridge
Greece, Corfu
The German Kaiser Wilhelm II was also very fond of spending time in Corfu. After purchasing the Achilleion after Sissi's death, he hired Carl Ludwig Sprenger as the palace's landscape architect and also built a bridge, locally named "Kaiser's Bridge" in his honor. The bridge was intended to get to the beach without crossing the road, the main artery of the island between north and south. The bridge shortened the distance from the bottom of the garden to the nearby beach. Its ruins, a monument to imperial luxury and impracticality, are a prominent point on the highway. Ironically, the central part of the bridge was demolished by the German occupiers during World War II to allow passage for military trucks.
