Neoria or Venetian Shipyards - a complex of 17 stone shipyards, built in the late 16th century by the Venetians, who then ruled the island, to repair and maintain ships of the Venetian fleet. Initially, shipyards had open access from the sea to tow ships for repair. Later, an embankment was built, which blocked access to the dock. During the Turkish occupation of Crete, the state of the harbor and docks declined, and shipyards began to be used mainly as military depots. Of the 17 docks, nine were gradually destroyed and demolished. A stone building of the city customs was built on the site of the destroyed docks. Currently, the building is being restored and will continue to be used for exhibitions and celebrations.
On the other side of the harbor are the docks of Neoria Moreau - a group of three Venetian ship docks, part of a complex of 17 stone docks built in the Venetian harbor of the city in the 16th century. Neoria Moreau, located in the eastern part of the harbor, was named after the quartermaster general Moreau. Of the three originally planned shipyards, the construction of two was completed, and the third erected walls. Later, the third shipyard completed the roof with tiles, but the roof was destroyed during the 1941 bombing of the island. The Neori Moro building has recently undergone a complete refurbishment and now houses the city's yacht club, showroom and cafeteria.
