Petralona Cave

Petralona Cave
Greece, Nea Kallikratia
The Petralona Cave is located near the village of Petralona on the Chalkidiki peninsula, 55 km from Thessaloniki. The cave is of karst origin, located on the western slope of Mount Katsika, at an altitude of about 270 m above sea level. An Anthropological Museum of Petralona was created at the entrance to the cave. The Petralona Cave is the site of the discovery of the remains of the oldest man in Europe and has traces of the use of fire by man, which are considered the oldest.

We rested with my daughter in Greece, on the Halkidiki peninsula, and decided to go on an excursion to the Petralona cave. The hotel guides and escorts talked about this excursion, so we roughly understood where we were going. Before that, I was in the caves in the Crimea, and my daughter was very interested, of course, for the first time. We stayed at the Kassandra Palace Hotel, which is just right for a family vacation, and it was convenient to go on this excursion, since it is not far to go to the cave.

The cave has been collecting and conserving the stages of evolution for thousands of years. Not only human, but also animals. The significance of the object is evidenced at least by the fact that the skull of the oldest person in Europe was found in it, and during the tour they show the place where it was found. Service in Greek is modest and unsightly. The tour is not very exciting, and I would advise you to stock up on an extended description before the trip, and read on the way to the cave. Be sure to take jackets or at least sweaters, it's cold downstairs.
