Guard of honor at the Parliament building

Evzones, Evzones
Greece, Athens
The guard of honor at the building of the Greek Parliament is provided by a special elite unit of the Greek army - Evzones. Evzones were formed mainly from highlanders, since 1940 they have been serving in the royal guard. Candidates go through a very rigorous selection, attractiveness and high growth are a prerequisite. Evzones also carry a guard of honor at the Presidential Palace.

You should definitely see this, especially if you are with children, they are simply delighted with this sight. It's impossible to look at this without smiling. The "chief" of the guard evokes special tenderness. At the end, he goes to each Evzone, wipes sweat with a cloth (the same one ... ), straightens the wrinkles on pleated skirts, straightens tassels, sleeves ...The poor guys are all wet with sweat, and they still stick to take pictures. But this action is one of the main attractions of Athens.

The guard of honor changes every hour. Weekends are more solemn, but we ended up on a weekday. Evzones amaze with their height of under two meters, they are dressed in national costumes, on their feet are funny and heavy, 3 kilograms each, wooden shoes with pompoms. They stand in the unbearable heat with imperturbable faces and everyone can take a picture with them, this also apparently became part of the ritual. The procedure itself lasts only a few minutes, but it's worth a look! I don’t know who came up with this, but it looks very funny - they alternately raise their legs and arms in front of each other and make some tricks with them, it looks very comical from the outside : ) We liked it so much that we came twice - in the afternoon and in the evening, when it got dark.
