Ancient cemetery in ancient Athens. In ancient times, potters settled around the cemetery, which led to the name of the cemetery. The Keramik quarter was known in ancient times as a major center for the production of Attic ceramics. Since 1913, excavations in Keramik have been carried out by the Athens branch of the German Archaeological Institute.
The Keramik cemetery, like all ancient burial places, was located outside the city wall. Numerous finds from burials dating back to the period from the III millennium BC. e. to the ancient Roman era, are exhibited in the National Archaeological Museum of Athens and the small Museum of Ceramics.
Thanks to the stream Eridan Keramik forms a biotope rich in animal and plant species. Keramika is home to a large population of Greek tortoises.
