Ancient Agora of Athens, Forum of Athens
Greece, Athens
The Athenian Agora is the city square of Athens, covering an area of approximately 5 hectares and located on a gentle slope northwest of the Acropolis. In ancient times, the Athenian Agora became the center of secular and social life, civil administration and courts, the most important place for trade and business, the theater stage for Greek drama, a platform for athletic competitions and a favorite place for intellectual discussions. Since 1931, the American School of Ancient Studies, under the direction of Leslie Shire, has carried out archaeological excavations throughout the Agora. Today, the Agora has become a favorite destination for tourists wishing to get acquainted with the history of ancient Athens.
