Cathedral of Sioni
Assumption Cathedral, Tbilisi Sioni Cathedral, Sioni Cathedral of the Dormition
Georgia, Tbilisi
Sioni - historically the main temple of Tbilisi and one of the 2 main ones in the Georgian church; named after Mount Zion and consecrated in honor of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. It stands on the banks of the Kura River in the historical center of the city. Before the construction of the Tsminda Sameba Cathedral (2004), there was a chair of the Georgian Catholicos here.
After the restoration in 1980-1983, the Sioni temple, despite the complex construction history, retained its medieval appearance. Away from the cathedral there are two bell towers - one is an old, three-tiered building of the 15th century, destroyed by the Persians and restored in the 20th century, the other is a typical example of Russian classicism (built in 1812). Frescoes by the Russian artist G. G. Gagarin have been preserved in the interior of the temple. The first place among the relics kept in the temple is occupied by the ancient cross of St. Nina.
