Westminster Abbey
Collegiate Church of St. Peter in Westminster, Westminster Abbey
Great britain, London
Westminster Abbey is a Gothic church in Westminster, west of the Palace of Westminster. It was built intermittently from 1245 to 1745, but retains its Gothic appearance. The traditional place of the coronation of the monarchs of Great Britain and the burial places of the monarchs of England. Along with the nearby St. Margaret's Church, the abbey is listed as a World Heritage Site.
With its identical square towers and openwork arches, this ancient English gothic abbey is one of the finest examples of medieval ecclesiastical architecture. But for the British, it is much more: it is the sanctuary of the nation, a symbol of everything that the British have fought and are fighting for, and here is the place where most of the country's rulers were crowned, many of whom are buried here.
