The Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery is the oldest museum complex in Scotland, located in several buildings of the University of Glasgow, based on the personal collections of the university professor of medicine, the outstanding anatomist William Hunter. In addition to collecting items related to medicine and anatomical studies, W. Hunter searched all over Europe for other rarities to replenish his collection. The exposition of the Hunterian Museum, opened in 1807, includes scientific instruments and instruments of famous scientists and doctors, one of the largest collections of coins in the world, documents and objects dedicated to the period of the Roman Empire in the history of Scotland, a collection of minerals, artifacts of Ancient Egypt, objects from the life of the indigenous residents of the Pacific region, collected by Captain Cook and other interesting collections.
The paintings collected by Hunter were transferred to the Hunterian Art Gallery, which occupies part of the university library building. In addition to paintings, the gallery features many watercolors and an outdoor sculpture garden.
