Monastery of the Jacobins

Couvent des Jacobins de Toulouse, Church of Les Jacobins
France, Toulouse
The Dominican order was founded in Toulouse in 1215. The Jacobin monastery at Toulouse is considered the mother church of the order, although it was not the first monastery built by Dominican friars. Churches such as Santa Sabina in Rome also claim this title.
The name Jacobins was given to the Dominican order in France. Their first monastery in Paris was located on rue Saint-Jacques (lat. Jacobus), and the name became associated with the order itself.
In the architectural complex of the monastery, the main building is the Church of the Jacobins. This is a large brick building, the construction of which began in 1230. The relics of Thomas Aquinas are kept here.
Thomas Aquinas, canonized in 1323, was a member of the Dominican order. In 1368, Pope Urban V issued a decree transferring his remains from Italy, where he died, to the mother church of the Jacobin order. They arrived in Toulouse in 1369. They were placed next to the altar.
For two centuries after the dissolution of the Dominican Order in France during the French Revolution, the monastery served a variety of purposes before undergoing major restoration in the 20th century. At the beginning of the 21st century, it was partly converted into a museum.

The ensemble of the monastery of the Dominican order of the Jacobins in Toulouse consists of a church, a chapel, service and residential buildings, as well as a covered gallery around the courtyard (cloister). Of the entire monastery ensemble, the church deserves special attention, which is a masterpiece of the Gothic style with impressive dimensions. It contains the relics of St. Thomas Aquinas and is a great relic. Very original is the so-called "Palm of the Jacobins" - a 28-meter-high column that supports the complex arched structure of the vault.
