Rouen Cathedral

Cathedral of Our Lady of Rouen, Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Rouen
France, Rouen
Rouen Cathedral is the cathedral church of the Archbishop of Normandy and Rouen. It is classified as a French national heritage site. Since 1876 it has been the tallest building in the world (the height of the spire is 151 m). In 1880, he ceded this title to the Cologne Cathedral.
For the first time, the fact of the existence of the Bishop of Rouen is mentioned in 314. At the end of the 4th century, a basilica was built on the site of the modern cathedral. Archaeological excavations show that the episcopal complex of Rouen consisted of two churches dedicated to Our Lady and Saint Stephen. In 841, during a Viking raid, a fire destroyed the complex. Since the political situation of Rouen remained uncertain, the complex was not restored. In 911, Rouen became the capital of the Duchy of Normandy and the first Duke of Rollo was baptized under the name Robert in a simple basilica. Around 1020, work began on a new Romanesque cathedral. Only a crypt has survived from it.
The cathedral was built in the Gothic style.
The most ancient part of the Gothic cathedral is the northern tower (Tower Saint-Romain), built in 1145. It completely burned down on June 1, 1944 after the bombing, only the walls remained from the building. The South Tower (Oil Tower) was built in 1485. The nave was built in 1200 when the existing Romanesque nave collapsed in a fire. The only surviving original portal is the northern one, the portal of John the Evangelist, representing scenes from the life of John the Evangelist and John the Baptist. It was repeatedly restored after 1769. The other two portals were badly damaged in the 16th century. The archbishop's palace, which forms a single complex with the cathedral, is a contemporary of the Gothic cathedral.
The cathedral was hit by a hurricane in the 18th century, and then heavily damaged during the bombing of Rouen during World War II on April 19, 1944.
After being hit by seven bombs, of which six exploded, the nave and chapels were badly damaged. After the bombardment on May 31, the northern tower burned out. During a strong storm in December 1999, the bell tower was damaged.

This is one of the most important architectural monuments of Gothic times in France and the main attraction of Rouen. Its height is 151 m, from 1876 to 1880 it was the tallest building in the world, later losing this title to the cathedral in Cologne. Outwardly, this is a very beautiful temple with amazing fine work on stone. The feeling that the cathedral is just lacy. But the interior decoration leaves much to be desired. Restoration work is underway in the cathedral, maybe this also spoiled the impression.
