Le Campo Santo

Cemetery cloister
France, Perpignan
Campo Santo is the oldest and largest surviving medieval cemetery in France.
The earliest date indicated on the tombstone is 1302.
An order from King James II of Mallorca dated 21 March 1331 specified the date for the resumption of construction work on the monastery adjacent to the cemetery.
Between 1317 and 1334 several bequests were made for "monastic works". Two tombs contain funeral inscriptions from 1315 and 1317.
Near the northeast corner of the cemetery is a Funeraria or funerary chapel dedicated to St. John the Evangelist, as well as St. Stephen and St. Hippolytus. It was built between 1383 and 1389, mainly at the expense of Pierre Fabre, a bourgeois of Perpignan.
There were other chapels here, such as the chapel of Saint-Clement (circa 1480), the chapel of Saint-Grégoire (circa 1600), which have disappeared.
The cemetery was surrounded by galleries. Of the original four, three remain.
The western gallery was demolished in 1825 by Monsignor Jean-François de Sonac-Belcastel, Bishop of Perpignan between 1823 and 1853, to build a seminary, which later became a gendarmerie barracks.
The walls of the cemetery and the chapel of Saint-Jean-Evangelist, known as the "Funerària", are classified as historical monuments by decree of June 30, 1910.
Campo Santo has the shape of a square with sides of approximately 56 meters. It is surrounded by a series of tiered-arched tombs that originally formed four galleries, three of which survive. The arcatures have a width from 2.10 m to 2.35 m.

This is not only a historical site, but also one of the oldest medieval cemeteries in France. Its harmonious architectural style and burial niches in the stone walls create a unique atmosphere and allow you to feel the spirit of the past. A visit to Le Campo Santo may leave a strange impression, but that is what makes it special and intriguing. The huge space and silence of the cemetery create an atmosphere of peace and allow you to get away from the bustle of the city. Located next to the cathedral.
