Palace of the Kings of Mallorca

Palace of the Kings of Majorca, Palais des Rois de Majorque, Palau dels Reis de Mallorca
France, Perpignan
The Palace of the Kings of Mallorca is a fortified palace with gardens overlooking the city of Perpignan in the Eastern Pyrenees, France.
In 1276, King James II of Mallorca made Perpignan the capital of the Kingdom of Mallorca. He began to build a palace with gardens on the Puig del Rey hill in the south of the city. Construction was completed in 1309.
Part of the northern wing of the palace was destroyed during the siege in 1502. After the Treaty of the Pyrenees in 1659, France received Roussillon and began developing the palace's defenses. As a result, it became a fortified palace in the Gothic style, built around three courtyards of 60 m².
It has two chapels: the lower one is the Chapel of the Queen, and the upper one is the Chapel of the Holy Cross.
The walls, built from rough stones and bricks held together with mortar, were plastered with lime and painted.
Doors, corridors, staircases, fittings and main towers are made of cut stone: sandstone, red, white and blue marble.
On the last weekend of August, the palace and gardens host a three-day guitar music festival, Guitares au Palais.

This is the most famous landmark, around which the city grew. Now this is the southern side of the historical center, the entrance is from the western side. The palace was built at the end of the 13th century as a residence for King Jaime II of Mallorca, son of King Jaime I of Aragon and Valencia, who reconquered Moorish-occupied Mallorca. After the king's death, his kingdom was divided between his two sons. The elder received most of the inheritance, and the remaining territories, including Majorca and Rousillon, passed to the younger Jaime II, who ruled from Perpignan and Montpellier.
