Maisons-Laffitte

Le chateau de Maisons-Laffitte
France, Paris
The castle (or palace) of Maisons-Laffitte is located in the eponymous suburb of Paris.
The castle was built during the reconstruction of the family estate of the rich man René de Longueuil, who in 1642 invited the famous architect Francois Mansart to do this work. Construction was difficult and costly. In 1646 the building was roofed. Interior decoration took another three years. Further work is being carried out in the park, luxurious stables are being built, which include an arena, a large gallery and a pool for a watering hole. In terms of the luxury of the exterior, the building could compete with similar buildings in Chantilly and Versailles.
Many famous personalities are involved in the history of the castle: Louis XV, Madame Pompadour, Countess Du Barry, Count d'Artois, Napoleon's ally Marshal Jean Lann. After the fall of the Empire in 1818, the marshal's widow sold the estate to the nouveau riche Jacques Laffitte.
After a series of commercial transactions and the threat of destruction of the castle, the state in 1905
buys the palace. On July 14, 1912, the castle opens its doors to the general public. The area where the palace is located is still a respectable bourgeois district. The only sad thing is that it bears the name of a man who not only did not make efforts to create the castle, but is directly guilty of destroying the complex.

If you are a fan of French castles, then you must visit this chateau. Getting to the castle from Paris is easy and convenient: RER A to the Maisons-Laffitte station, then 2 stops by bus 12 or walk 7 minutes. The castle is open daily: 10.00 to 12.30 and from 14.00 to 17.00. There are very few people. The castle was built in 1646 (construction began in 1636, finishing completed in 1651). It is considered the best building of the architect F. Mansard. The castle has changed many owners. It was owned by the aristocratic family de Longueil (under Jean de Longueil, the castle was at the zenith of glory, Voltaire often visited it, who wrote the Henriade here.
