Cathedral of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker

La Cathédrale orthodoxe russe Saint-Nicolas, St. Nicholas Cathedral in Nice, Russian Orthodox Cathedral in Nice
France, Nice
Nicholas Cathedral in Nice was built at the beginning of the 20th century. and belongs to the Russian Orthodox Church. The temple was founded at the place of rest after a serious illness of the heir of the Russian Emperor Alexander II - Nikolai Alexandrovich. The construction of the temple was sponsored by the Russian community of Nice, Russian nobles and the Russian Emperor Nicholas II himself and his mother Maria Fedorovna. This five-domed cathedral, 50 meters high, was built on the model of Moscow churches of the 17th century, finished with pink granite and ceramic tiles. It is richly decorated with mosaic icons and frescoes, many rare pictorial icons are also kept here, and the carved three-tiered iconostasis is admirable.
Next to the temple is the St. Nicholas Chapel, and in the crypt of the temple there is a small museum dedicated to the history of the Russian diaspora in Nice.

I have long wanted to see this cathedral with my own eyes. It is really beautiful, and especially it looks like this in the place where it is located. We walked from the embankment for about 30 minutes. It is a pity that they do not allow taking pictures inside, I would like to leave it as a keepsake. Inside, everyone speaks Russian, which is not surprising. We were not at work, but there were a lot of people. Even if you are a non-believer, for the sake of such beauty and history, it is worth visiting this place.

The project of a new Orthodox cathedral (instead of the old one on Longchamp Street) for the growing Russian population of Nice appeared in 1896 during the stay of the widow of Alexander III, Empress Maria Feodorovna, on the Cote d'Azur, she patronized the construction of the temple. The project was carried out by the professor of architecture of the Imperial Academy of Arts M. T. Preobrazhensky, he gave the cathedral an old Russian, pre-Petrine style . . It was not easy to choose a place, as a result, Emperor Nicholas II provided the land of Bermont Park that belonged to him for the cathedral.
