Monastery of Notre Dame de Simies
Monastère Notre-Dame de Cimiez, Monastere de Cimiez, Cimiez Monastery
France, Nice
The Monastery of Notre-Dame de Cimiès is located on the hill of Cimiez and belongs to the Franciscan monastic order. This religious complex consists of three objects: the Church of the Assumption of the Mother of God with a prayer house, monastic residential and utility rooms; a wonderful monastery garden with a rose garden and a beautiful view of Nice; and the cemetery where A. Matisse and other famous residents of the city are buried. In the church you can see the works of the outstanding Renaissance artist Louis Brea (paintings "Pieta", "Crucifixion" and "Descent from the Cross"), as well as an old carved wooden altar. In some monastic premises, the Franciscan Museum now operates, which acquaints its visitors with the history, customs, foundations and way of life of this monastic order.
