The old almshouse (Vieille Charite) is located in the heart of the Panier quarter (Le Panier). The almshouse was built in the 17th century in order, according to the royal decree and the decision of the city authorities of Marseille, "...to isolate the poor and impoverished citizens in a proper place. " Such a place turned out to be the area near the cathedral. Since 1986, a scientific and cultural center has been located in the former almshouse. Address: Rue de la Charite, 2→
