Abbey Saint Victor
Basilique Saint-Victor, Abbey of Saint Victor
France, Marseille
The Abbey of Saint-Victor is the oldest religious building in Marseille, a former Catholic monastery that was important in the economic and spiritual life of the region. The monastery was founded in the 5th century by St. John Cassian on the burial site of Christian martyrs and named after one of them - Victor of Marseilles. The monastery was closed and almost completely destroyed during the French Revolution, leaving the towers with walls and the monastery church, which preserved the altar, sculptures and stone carvings. Services and ceremonies are held in the current church, and a museum of Christian art is also located here. The real value of the Abbey of Saint-Victor is a collection of sarcophagi of the 4th century, located in the caves of the monastery and decorated with inscriptions and carvings depicting the face of a buried person.
