Museum of Gallo-Roman Civilization
Musee de la Civilization Gallo-Romaine
France, Lyon
The Museum of Gallo-Roman Civilization was opened in 1975 on the hill of Fourviere, in the place where the center of the Roman settlement of Lugdun, the capital of Gaul, was located. The museum building was designed by the architect Bernard Serfus so as not to disturb the general view of the archaeological site, which includes an ancient theater and an odeon.
The museum contains such artifacts as statues, jewelry, everyday life items from the time of Roman rule, a mosaic depicting circus competitions, many sarcophagi, the texts of Emperor Claudius' speeches recorded on special tables, a front bronze chariot, a model of Lugdun, amphoras, altars, etc.
Many exhibits of the museum have a unique value and are about 2000 years old.
