Basilica of Saints Nazarius and Celsius

Basilique Saint-Nazaire-et-Saint-Celse de Carcassonne, The Basilica of Saints Nazarius and Celsus
France, Carcassonne
The Basilica of Saints Nazarius and Celsius is a small Roman Catholic basilica located in the fortress of Carcassonne, France. National monument of France since 1840. Made in the Gothic-Romanesque architectural tradition. Until 1803 it was the cathedral church of the diocese of Carcassonne.
The original church is believed to have been built in the 6th century during the reign of Theodoric the Great, ruler of the Visigoths.
On June 12, 1096, Pope Urban II visited the city and blessed the construction of the cathedral, which was completed in the first half of the 12th century. Around the end of the 13th century, during the reigns of Kings Philip III and Philip IV, the cathedral was rebuilt in the Gothic style. It remained the cathedral of Carcassonne until 1803, when it lost the title to the current Cathedral of Carcassonne (Cathédrale Saint-Michel de Carcassonne). In 1898 the church received the status of a minor basilica.
The floor plan of the basilica is built of sandstone and is based on a Latin cross with a total length of 59m, a width of the nave of 16m and a transept of 36m. The oldest part of the church is the Romanesque nave. The central stained-glass window of the choir of the basilica dates from 1280 - one of the oldest in the south of France.
The architecture of the basilica is laconic, dominated by vertical lines.
The church has several portals. They are not symmetrical. The facades of the basilica are traditionally for the Gothic style, decorated with a series of gargoyles on the cornices.

On the territory of the Carcassonne fortress there is a beautiful old basilica. The oldest parts of the temple that we can see today date back to the 12th century. All that has survived from this era is the first two eastern columns of the nave and the dilapidated crypt. Whatever it was, but the Cathedral of Carcassonne was consecrated in 1150. Although there were still 180 years before the end of construction. Due to such a long construction, the temple is a combination of Romanesque and Gothic styles.
