ancient theater

Antique theater of Arles, Théâtre Antique, Theater in Arelate
France, Arles
The Antique Theater of Arles is located in the city center east of Place de la République. It was built in the time of Augustus. There were many statues then, including the statue of Augustus and the statue of Venus, which now stands in the Louvre. Now among the ruins of the theater you can find only two whole columns, affectionately called by the locals "two widows".

The ancient theater (Theatre Antique) was built at the end of the 1st century BC. e. during the reign of Emperor Augustus. This is one of the first Roman theaters built of stone. Unlike the Greek theatres, it was not dedicated to Dionysus, but to Apollo. It is known that the theater remained active until the beginning of the 5th century. Unfortunately, the theater is only partially preserved. For its rich history, it even managed to serve as a quarry for the construction of various buildings of the city.
