Cathedral of Our Lady of Amiens

Cathédrale Notre-Dame d'Amiens, Amiens Cathedral
France, Anmien
Cathedral of the Catholic Diocese of Amiens. In terms of volume (200,000 cubic meters) it is the largest Gothic cathedral in France.
Since 1981, the cathedral has been included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
The cathedral, which has survived to this day, was not the first structure to stand on this site. The previous one burned down in 1218. Construction of the cathedral began in 1220. It was not until 1528 that a spire was erected to tower over the cathedral.
After the sack of Constantinople by the Crusaders, a relic appeared in the cathedral - the front part of the head of St. John the Baptist.
The cathedral's ancient stained glass windows were lost.
In March 1918, the cathedral was heavily damaged during German shelling. The cathedral was not damaged during the Second World War.
Amiens, Chartres and Reims cathedrals are considered standards of mature Gothic architecture.
In the era of late French Gothic, there was a saying: “Whoever wants to build the most perfect cathedral must take towers from Chartres, a façade from Paris, a longitudinal ship from Amiens, and sculpture from Reims.”
In the pier of the central door of the cathedral there is a statue of Christ, called the “beautiful god of Amiens,” - a striking example of the medieval style. In the tympanum there is an image of the Last Judgment.

The cathedral is the largest in France, with a volume of 20.000 cubic meters, which is enough to house two cathedrals the size of Notre Dame Cathedral. To say that I was surprised is to say nothing. I simply couldn’t believe my eyes, it was so powerful and beautiful, very beautiful, simply mesmerizing! The cathedral is one of the largest Catholic heritage sites. At the time of completion, an area of .7. 8 thousand square meters could accommodate the entire population of Amiens (approximately 10 thousand people).
