House Museum of Christopher Columbus

Christopher Columbus Museum, Christopher Columbus Museum
Spain, Valladolid
The Museum of Christopher Columbus is located in the center of Valladolid, in a building built on the site of a house imprudently demolished at the end of the 19th century, in which the great navigator lived several centuries ago, until his death in May 1506. The building was built in 1965 in the Spanish Gothic style "Isabelino", similar to the house of Diego Columbus, the eldest son of Christopher, later a new modern four-story building of the museum in the shape of a ship was added to the "old" house.

The museum presents numerous historical documents and evidence of the four voyages of Columbus to the shores of the New World, ceramics and tools of the peoples of America, ship models, navigational tools, nautical books, and various items from the Golden Age of Spain. On a pedestal in the courtyard of the museum there is a copy of the ship "Santa Maria", on which Christopher Columbus made his first expedition to the shores of America.

In the XVI-XVII centuries, Valladolid was the capital of Spain, the last years of the life of the Discoverer of America, Christopher Columbus, passed here. Let someone sailed to America much earlier, but it took place secretly, and for the whole Old World, the discovery of a new continent was precisely the voyage of Columbus. The circumstances of the life and death of the Great Navigator are contradictory in different sources - according to one version, he died in Valladolid in 1506. There is no reliable information about the house where he lived - in the 19th century, the house, which was considered the home of Columbus, was imprudently demolished during the redevelopment of city streets.
