City of Arts and Sciences in Valencia

Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias, City of Arts and Sciences
Spain, Valencia
The City of Arts and Sciences today includes the following five structures:
1. El Palau de les Arts Reina Sofia - Palace of Arts of Queen Sofia.
2. L'Hemisferic - Planetarium, 3-D Imax cinema and theater of laser performances.
3. L'Umbracle - Greenhouse.
4. El Museu de les Ciencies Principe Felipe - Prince Philippe Scientific and Educational Museum.
5. L'Oceanogràfic - Aquarium and Oceanographic Open Air Park.

In the early 90s of the last century, the administration of Valencia came to the conclusion that the city needed to be brought to a fundamentally different level of national and cultural significance. This is how the idea of building a giant complex arose, which would become a kind of symbol of cultural tourism and developing recreation. A picturesque site was chosen for construction, located on the south bank of the Turia River in the middle between the old part of the city and the coastal region of Nazareth. In the western part of the complex, it was decided to build a communication tower, and in addition to it, the Museum of Science and the Planetarium.
In 1991, architect Santiago Calatrava won a grant to build a communications tower. In 1996, the leadership of the city changed. The new composition of the Municipality considered the construction of a communication tower inappropriate and decided to build the Palace of Arts instead. The planetarium was merged with the library a few years later and took its place in a single block located between the Palace of Arts and the Museum of Sciences.
Visiting this unique complex, covering an area of about 350,000 sq. m, you can make an unforgettable and fascinating journey to the mysteries of the underwater world, space, nature and science. It seems to symbolize the "new" Valencia and clearly demonstrates the fact that culture can ennoble and transform the city. The "City of Arts and Sciences" is a huge open space with 5 futuristic-looking buildings that make up a single, grandiose complex. The area around is surrounded by squares and parks. Thus, the "City of Arts and Sciences" is a kind of "symbiosis" of urbanism and wildlife. The main purpose of creating the complex was to encourage the development of science and technology, as well as to bring to the masses some basics of cultural and scientific content. Today, the "City of Arts and Sciences" is the hallmark of the city.

If you are in Valencia, look into the city of the future. My husband is an architect, and so we were specifically looking for a guide for a tour of the City of Arts and Sciences, we usually fly on our own without travel agencies, but for this place a knowledgeable person was needed. Found on myvalencia. The Opera House of the Palace of Arts just amazed me! Almost three hours flew by like one minute, the City is simply magnificent!

In 1989, the President of Valencia, Juan Lerma, accepted the idea proposed by José Marí a Ló pez Painro, professor of the history of sciences at the University of Valencia, to build a science museum in the park of the old bed of the Turia River. Lerma commissioned the design of the museum to a team that designed and built on similar spaces with similar characteristics in Munich, Canada and London. The architecture of the museum complex should be exceptional. And she is truly exceptional! This is something fantastic! Crowned by the City of Arts and Science Oceanarium.
