Military Museum of the Canary Islands
Museo Militar de Canarias, Almeida Fortress
Spain, Tenerife
The Military History Museum of the Canary Islands is located in the Almeida Fortress in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. It was opened in 1988. The same building houses the Military Archives and the Military Library of the Canary Islands.
The trapezoidal fortress, built at the end of the 19th century, is located on a hill north of the Toscal region, between the castles of San Miguel and San Pedro.
On November 6, 1854, the construction of the Almeida Fortress began. In 1884, the construction was completed, but by that time the fortress had already lost its military significance, as weapons became more advanced, and the population of the city increased. The fortress went through various changes. In 1940, it was disarmed and then turned into the modern Regional Military Museum of the Canary Islands.
At the entrance, above the gates of the museum, there is an inscription “All for the Motherland”. On the western side is a pillbox (long-term firing point), towering over a small valley surrounded by mountains.
Now the museum's exposition presents various weapons, among which are the famous guns "Tiger" (Admiral Nelson lost his arm from her volley) and "Hercules". Museum visitors can also see in its exposition part of the weapons used in clashes during the conquest of the island of Tenerife. The museum funds are of great importance for the development of the historical cartography of the Canary Islands.
