Palacio de Carta
Spain, Tenerife
Perhaps the most famous 18th century secular place in Santa Cruz is the Carta Palace, located on Candelaria Square. It was built in 1752 by the private commission of Captain Matias Rodríguez Kart in the Canarian Baroque style, although neoclassical influences are already noticeable in the restrained decoration of its facade, which contrasts with the richness of the interiors.
From the second half of the 19th century, the palace was rented out, then it housed the city hall, and from the middle of the 20th century, a bank. This is one of the first buildings in the Canary Islands and the first building in Santa Cruz to be included in the lists of monuments of national cultural heritage.
