dragon tree
Canary Islands Dragon Tree, Parque del Drago, Dragon Tree
Spain, Tenerife
The dragon tree is one of the symbols of Tenerife. In the northwest of the island in the town of Icod de los Vinos, in the park del Drago, the most famous dragon tree in the Canary Islands grows. This is a relic plant similar to a cactus. The leaves, growing on thick branches, are sharp and hard and more like brushes, which are made from them. Dragon trees grow very slowly, the trunk begins to branch over time and the tree takes on a bizarre shape.
Determining the age of a tree is difficult because it does not form annual rings. However, scientists claim that the tree growing in the Icod de los Vinos park is 2500-3000 years old. If this fact is true, then the Canarian tree can claim the title of the most ancient plant on the planet.
