The Church of the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary is a Catholic church located in the heart of Santa Cruz, a few hundred meters from the port embankment. The church was founded by Padre Juan Guerra in 1500 on the site of the first hermitage of the Spanish conquistadors. This is the first and main temple of the city, called by many locals the Cathedral, although it is not one. In 1638 the church received its name, and in 1652 it was destroyed by fire and rebuilt a year later.
The temple houses many Canarian relics. The main one is a silver cross erected on the coast of Añaso by the conquistador Alonso Fernandez de Lugo in 1494. The cross, after which the city was named, rests in a silver-plated glass urn on the side of the central altar. Among the oldest valuables, one can also note a small Gothic image of Our Lady of the Comforter. The most important objects of worship in the temple are the images of the patroness of the city, who gave the name of the church and the patron of the city - the Apostle James. Of the paintings, two works by Juan de Miranda stand out. In addition, the church is a tomb for many people who left their mark on the history of the city.
