Cathedral of Tarragona

Catedral de Tarragona, Catedral Basilica Metropolitana i Primada de Santa Maria, Santa Tecla Catedral
Spain, Tarragona
The Cathedral of Saint Thekla is the most significant and famous monument of Tarragona. The construction of the cathedral began in 1171 on the site of the ancient Roman temple of Jupiter, which first replaced the Visigothic temple, and later the mosque. The cathedral was consecrated in 1331, while still unfinished, construction was completed in 1350. The architects of the cathedral were Raymond de Mila, master Bertomeu and Guillem Clergue.

The architecture of the apse bears the imprint of the Romanesque style and resembles a fortress in outline. In the eastern part is the Diocese Museum with a large collection of carpets, numerous wrought iron products, ceramics, coins, old manuscripts and other valuable items.

There are fifteen bells in the bell tower of the cathedral, some of which are among the oldest in Europe, in particular the Asumpta bell was cast in 1313, and the Fructuosus bell in 1314.

I love Spain for its amazing architecture. This place is very expressive, in particular - the courtyard, where fruit trees frame the cathedral and at the same time stand out noticeably against the background of the Gothic style of architecture of this temple. Ducks splashed in the pools. A very beautiful place, bewitching with its unusualness.

Here you want to photograph everything and touch, touch the walls of this cathedral. Beautiful old building, very cozy courtyard. Near the cathedral there is a very good cafe with a view of this man-made masterpiece of art.

I liked the descriptions (audio tour) of the elements of architecture and the history of this place. Wonderful impressions, a good feeling inside leaves a visit to this cathedral. Although actually visiting religious architectural structures was never really interesting for me, this time everything turned out differently. I liked it very much, I want to come back again.

My wife and I visited many churches, castles, mansions etc and this was one of the best. There were few tourists so the place turned out to be very quiet and peaceful. The cathedral itself is very large, so be careful not to get lost there. The interior decoration is very old and simple.

Tarragona Cathedral is considered the largest cathedral in Catalonia. This is one of the most interesting and remarkable monuments of the transitional period from Romanesque to Gothic. In the cloister, pay attention to the "procession of rats" on one of the capitals. According to local legend, a cat is immortalized there, which, pretending to be dead, was able to lure mice into a trap. Opening hours: Monday to Saturday, from 10-00 (closing times vary depending on the season). Sunday is a day off.
