Seville Cathedral Maria de la Sede and Giralda

Catedral de Santa María de la Sede, Catedral de Sevilla, Seville Cathedral of Saint Mary of the See, La Giralda
Spain, Seville
The Cathedral of Seville was erected on the site of a former mosque. From the old Islamic building, the "Gate of Forgiveness", the Orange Courtyard and the hundred-meter Giralda Tower, which previously served as a minaret, have been preserved. The construction of the cathedral lasted more than a hundred years, so several styles were mixed in its architecture. Inside it is a real cultural treasure, here you can see the crown of the Holy Virgin de los Reyes, decorated with precious stones; the statue of Christ the Merciful, created by Martinez Montañez; paintings by famous Spanish artists Velasquez, Murillo, Goya. The main altar is an outstanding masterpiece of Gothic art and is a large retablo with 45 biblical scenes and an ancient statue of the Madonna in the center. The cathedral's cross is said to be made from the first gold brought by Columbus from America, and the cathedral is said to contain the remains of a navigator in a majestic sarcophagus. The chapels and chapels of the cathedral also contain many richly decorated tombs of Spanish kings and members of their families, altarpieces and other religious works of art.
Near the cathedral rises the slender Giralda bell tower, decorated with ornaments and patterns. Its height is 114 meters. The bell tower is considered one of the symbols of Seville. Here, at an altitude of 90 meters, there is a panoramic observation deck overlooking the city (admission is paid).

The Cathedral of Seville is so large that it is simply impossible to touch it from the outside in any way. It does not fit into a single composition like Mesquita in Cordoba, despite its also impressive size. The cathedral was built on the site of a mosque. The Giralda (former minaret) and the orange courtyard remained from the mosque. Even at the time of its construction, the cathedral amazed the townspeople with its size, and the inhabitants of Seville said: “Descendants will consider us mad because we decided to build a temple of such beauty and such dimensions.
