This is a fairly young, modern temple, built between 1941 and 1949 by the architect Aurelio Gomez Millan. The basilica was built on the site of a 13th-century church that burned down in 1936 and was called Iglesia de Sant Gil. The church is popular because it houses the image of one of the most revered saints in Seville - the Sorrowing Holy Virgin of Macarena. In Seville, it is customary to depict the Virgin in the image of Dolorosa - the Sorrowful, and it is believed that only Macarena smiles slightly through her tears.→
