Plaza Mayor is the main square of Palma de Mallorca. It is located in the central district of the city, a few meters from other significant attractions. Not far from the square are the Church of St. Michael, the Main Theater, the Church of St. Eulalia and the building of the Municipal Council. The place that the square occupies was formerly occupied by the ancient monastery of St. Philip Neri with several neighboring houses. Until 1823, the Inquisition was located here. 10 years have passed since the demolition of the residence of the Inquisition, before work began on the design of the square, completed by 1838. Work continued into the 20th century with the construction of underground parking and shopping galleries.
Rectangular in plan, the square is framed along the perimeter by three- and four-story buildings. From the side of the Marquis Palmer Square, two prominent examples of Catalan modernism of the early 20th century can be seen side by side. Built with an innovative use of metal structures, the Aguila building, together with the Can Rey house, showcase lavishly decorated façades, on which the polychrome ceramics of the Roqueta factory in Mallorca stand out.
