Monastery of Saint Francis
Convento de San Francisco, Basilica and Claustro de San Francisco
Spain, Majorca
The construction of the monastery commissioned by the Franciscan congregation began at the end of the 13th century, in 1281, and ended 100 years later. In 1580, its Gothic façade was damaged by lightning. The reconstruction of the monastery under the direction of the baroque architect Francisco de Herrera began in 1618 and continued until the end of the century (some changes were made until the middle of the 19th century).
The monastery complex consists of a church, a cloister and several outbuildings. In one of the side chapels of the church there is a sarcophagus with the ashes of Raymond Lull. Currently, the territory of the monastery is divided into different parts and belongs to the church, the college and the House of Culture.
