Almudaina Royal Palace

Royal Palace of La Almudaina, Palacio Real de La Almudaina
Spain, Majorca
The Royal Palace of Almudaina, located on the waterfront next to the Cathedral, is the oldest building in Mallorca. Its walls still remember the first fortification of the Romans, erected on this site in 123 BC. In the Arab period (mid-10th century), a citadel was built on the site of the Roman ruins - the residence of the Vali or the ruler of the Saracens, known during the Reconquista as "Zuda". After the conquest of Mallorca by the Aragonese crown, the fortress was rebuilt by order of King Jaime II. Having proposed the design of the Royal Palace of Perpignan as a model, Jaime II entrusts the work to the architect Pere Salva. In the process of reconstruction, which began in 1281 and continued until 1343, the Muslim palace acquired four battlements, a portico and an elegant colonnade on the facade from the sea. On the side, a huge one-story Throne Hall with high Gothic vaults was attached to it. In 1310 the Main Chapel was erected. In the middle of the 16th century, after the collapse of the vault of the Throne Hall during restoration, it was divided into two floors.
The decoration of the palace complex contains ancient paintings, pieces of furniture, fireplaces, Flemish carpets of the 16th and 17th centuries, and military paraphernalia. Frescoes from the 14th century have been preserved in one of the halls.

Currently, the palace is under the patronage of the National Treasure Foundation and is the official summer residence of the royal family. One of the buildings of the complex houses the military commandant's office of the Balearic Islands. Most of the premises are open to the public.
