Monument to the fallen for Spain

Monumento a los Caídos por España, Monument to Fallen Heroes
Spain, Madrid
The Monument to the Fallen for Spain was unveiled in Piazza Lealtad in May 1840, on the anniversary of the Madrid uprising against the French occupiers, at the site where in May 1808 captured participants in the uprising were shot by Napoleonic soldiers. In 1820, a competition was announced for the best design of a monument to Spanish patriots, which was won by the architect Isidro González Velázquez. Construction began in 1821 and stretched out due to internal strife among the top of the Spanish government for almost 20 years.
The monument is a square base with a two-part plinth on it, ending with an obelisk 5.6 meters high. In the western part of the lower plinth there is a sarcophagus with the cremated remains of the executed Madrid residents, on the upper plinth there are 4 symbolic figures: 2 male and 2 female, depicting Constancy, Value, Virtue and Patriotism. The monument is surrounded by a high metal fence-palisade.
In 1985, at the monument, under the sarcophagus, the Eternal Flame was lit, and the monument itself became dedicated to all those who died for the Spanish independence. The inscription above the Eternal Flame reads: "In honor of all those who gave their lives for Spain."
