Cathedral of Santa Maria de Leon

Santa María de León, León Cathedral, León Cathedral
Spain, Leon
The main attraction of Leon is its Cathedral. The construction of Santa Maria de Leon began at the beginning of the 13th century. and lasted for about 100 years. The cathedral is one of the main churches in northern Spain and a prime example of Spanish Gothic architecture. In its appearance, the influence of the Amiens and Reims cathedrals is clearly present.
Due to the abundance of light penetrating the temple, and the huge number of stained glass windows, the cathedral was nicknamed the “House of Light”. The total area of stained-glass windows of the XIII-XIV centuries. is about 1800 sq. m. Some stained glass windows reach 12 m in height, and the total number of stained glass windows is 145 (depicting the Prophets, Saints, Spanish kings, plant and heraldic motifs, as well as scenes from medieval everyday life).
The building has the shape of a Latin cross in plan, from the west it is adjoined by 2 towers - El Reloj (Sentry) and Las Campanas (Bell), and from the east - five chapels built at different times with the burial places of bishops and kings.
Inside the cathedral there are many sculptures and partially preserved ancient frescoes. Outside, the buildings are decorated with numerous chimeras, gargoyles and griffins. The temple is decorated with paintings by Spanish, Italian and Flemish masters of the 14th-16th centuries. Since 1964, a museum has been operating at the cathedral, where many outstanding works of Spanish medieval religious art, ancient manuscript codes and historical documents are kept.

The name of the city has nothing to do with lions. Leon - the word "legion" that has changed over time, the Roman Legion of Septimus was once located here, guarding the gold mines. The city lies on the path of pilgrims to Santiago de Compostela to the relics of St. James - the heavenly patron of Spain. Surrounded by the fortress walls stands the Cathedral of Santa Maria. This cathedral is one of the most significant Gothic buildings in Spain, its construction began in 1255. Before that, there was a Romanesque church built on the foundations of even earlier Roman baths.
