Tower of Hercules

Torre de Hercules
Spain, La Corunya
The Tower of Hercules is the oldest operating lighthouse in the world, built during the Roman Empire. It is located at the extreme northern point of the Spanish city of La Coruña near the waters of the Atlantic Ocean. The construction of the lighthouse began in the 2nd century AD. The height of the tower is 55 meters; there are four rooms on the lower floors of the building. The upper floor was completed in 1791, and diagonal stripes were added on the facade of the tower, imitating spiral paths. At the foot of the lighthouse there is a wind rose sign indicating the direction of the cardinal points. In 2009, the Tower of Hercules was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.

The lighthouse tower is visible from afar. This is the only ancient lighthouse in Europe that still functions today. Here was the very edge of the ancient world. The lighthouse on the site where, according to legend, Hercules twice descended into the Kingdom of Hades, was erected by the Romans in the 2nd century. During its long life, the tower has undergone a number of reconstructions, initially it was more massive, on a spacious platform at the very top there was a turret for a signal fire. The exploits of Hercules date back to those ancient times when Jesus Christ was not yet born.
