Stupa of Enlightenment in Benalmadena
Benalmadena Stupa
Spain, Costa del Sol
In Benalmadena, in 2003, the largest stupa in the Western world (a Buddhist structure for storing relics, which has a domed shape) was built - the Enlightenment Stupa (33 meters high), the seventeenth and last stupa that Rinpoche Lopon Tsechu built in Europe and the Caucasus. Rinpoche did not live four months before the consecration of the stupa, which took place on October 5, 2003. The stupa was solemnly opened by Kunzig Shamar Rinpoche. The opening ceremony was attended by Lyonpo Sangay Ngedup (Minister from Bhutan), Lama Ole Nydahl and Mayor of Benalmaden Enrique Bolin.
