Roman theater in Malaga

Teatro romano de Málaga, Ancient Rome Theater
Spain, Costa del Sol
The Roman theater in Malaga is located at the foot of the slope where the Alcazaba stands, on Alcazabilla Street. It was discovered in 1951, when work was being carried out in the House of Culture, which, as it turned out, was built on top of the theatre. In 1994 the House of Culture was demolished and the Roman theater was completely excavated.

The theater was built in the 1st century. BC e., when Malaga was part of one of the provinces of the Roman Empire called Farther Spain. The theater was built under Octavian Augustus and was used until the 3rd century AD. e. During the era of Muslim rule, the theater served as a quarry for the reconstruction of the Alcazaba: the capitals and columns of the theater became fixtures for the horseshoe-shaped arches of the gates of the Alcazaba.
The Malaga Roman Theater consists of three parts: an amphitheater, an orchestra (in the ancient theater - a round platform for performances) and a skene (in the ancient theater - a dressing room, later the word "scene" came from it). The amphitheater, intended for spectators, has a radius of 31 meters and a height of about 16 meters. It is built in the form of a semicircle and is divided into sectors by stairs. The seats in the theater were divided into three sectors, separated from each other by aisles. The entrance to the various sectors of the amphitheater was through vaulted arches or passages.

The orchestra is a semicircular space located between the amphitheater and the skene. It is formed by the lower stands, where the city nobility sat. Behind the orchestra there is a skene, consisting of a plank platform where performances were shown (the platform was raised above the orchestra so that nothing would prevent the nobility from watching the performance), as well as the front skene, which is a protective wall, which also strengthened the acoustics (it was the same height , as the highest part of the amphitheater).
