Picasso Museum in Malaga
Museo Picasso Málaga, Picasso Museum, Palace of Buenavista
Spain, Costa del Sol
The Pablo Picasso Museum in Malaga is located in the Buenavista Palace in the old Jewish quarter of Malaga, not far from the house where the artist was born. It is one of the six museums dedicated to the artist in Spain, representing all periods of the artist's work, from the blue period to surrealism. The museum's collection contains about 155 paintings donated by the artist's relatives and friends (most of them were donated by Christina Ruiz-Picasso, wife of Picasso's son, and her son Bernard). The museum was opened in 2003 by King Juan Carlos of Spain and Queen Sofia.
The Buenavista Palace, which houses the museum, was originally a royal residence. It was ordered to be built in 1530 by Diego de Casaglia, the ruler of Malaga, half a century after the reconquest of Malaga. After that, the palace changed several owners until it became a museum in 2003.
