Soail Fortress
Sohail Castle, Soahil Fortress, Sohail Castle, Castillo de Sohail
Spain, Costa del Sol
The imposing fortress of Soail, built in the Moorish style, is located a short distance from the center of Fuengirola and is a symbol of the resort.
The Catholic kings expelled the Arabs from Fuengirola in 1485, destroying the walls of the fortress during the assault. Regular attacks by pirates forced them to soon be restored: during the raids, the entire local population sat in the castle. From 1810 to 1812, the castle was occupied by Napoleon's troops, successfully defending it from the British. The French were evicted from the castle by the Spaniards, once again damaging the fortress walls. Restoration work is underway in the fortress.
