Alcazaba Fortress Palace

Alcasaba, Alcazaba de Málaga
Spain, Costa del Sol
Alcazaba (which means "fortress" in Arabic) in Malaga is a Muslim palace-fortress, located on the slope of Mount Gibralfaro, on top of which there is also a fortress of the same name. The Alcazaba and the fortress of Gibralfaro are connected by a road surrounded by zigzag walls (the so-called "Koracha"). The palace-fortress is located opposite the port, next to the city park, not far from the Malaga Cathedral.

According to Muslim sources, the Alcazaba was ordered to be built between 1057 and 1063 by the Berber ruler of Granada, Badis ben Abus. Marble was used for its construction, as well as columns and capitals from a nearby Roman theater. In 1092, the Almoravids occupied the Alcazaba, and in 1146, the Almohads.

The structures of the 11th century were built from limestone mined in quarries near the sea. However, this limestone had one serious drawback: it quickly collapsed from moisture, therefore, at the end of the 13th and beginning of the 14th century, the walls and towers of the palace were strengthened, and masonry walls were added to them from the outside.
From the main entrance of the Alcazaba and the so-called Column Gate, you can climb to the Arch of Christ, which leads to a side passage to the tower. In the center of the upper part of the Alcazaba are the "Chambers of Granada", where the kings and rulers of the city lived. In the eastern part of the fortress walls, the remains of a residential area with small houses, once consisting of three blocks, were found. In the northern part of the district there was a bathhouse, the water of which came from a deep well, which was called the Bottomless Well. On the outskirts of the area is the 14th century Torre del Omenahe, which is based on an almost perfect square.
