The castle is located on the top of Mount San Juan in the north of the city of Blanes. From a height of 173 m above sea level, a beautiful view opens up not only of the city itself, but also of its surroundings. And on a clear sunny day, you can see the top of
Montjuic in
Barcelona.
The castle was built in the middle of the XII century by order of Viscount Cabrera. Its foundation was the ruins of an old defensive structure from the time of Roman rule. The important strategic position of the castle allowed the city to be invulnerable. In the 16th century, when pirate attacks from the sea became more frequent, a watchtower was attached to one of the walls. Later, in the 16th century, the castle was sold to Francesco Montsada, a Spanish military man, diplomat and writer, for private ownership.
In 1949, San Juan Castle was included in the list of cultural heritage of Spain. By this time, he was badly damaged: almost all outbuildings, including part of the walls, were destroyed. The surviving sections of the protective walls are now restored and are available for visiting. The watchtower, as the youngest building, has been preserved almost unchanged.
