Werder Castle
Sant Salvador de Verdera, Sant Salvador de Verdera
Spain, Costa Brava
Werder Castle is an ancient fortress located above the monastery of Sant Pere de Rodes, on the top of Mount Werder (approximately 670 meters above sea level) and bearing the name of San Salvador de Werder. It was founded no later than 904 - the first annalistic mention of the fortress dates back to this time. You can climb to the walls of the castle only on foot, either from the chapel of San Onofre in the village of Palau Saverdera, or from the Benedictine monastery. In previous centuries, the castle served to protect the area from the attacks of the Saracens, the French and sea robbers. Several towers and sections of the fortress wall located between them are quite well preserved.
