Building of the Municipality of Alicante
Ayuntamiento de Alicante, Municipality of Alicante
Spain, Costa Blanca
The building of the municipality of Alicante is a project of the architect Victorio Soler. Construction began in 1699 and continued for almost a century, until 1780.
The palace was built in the Spanish Renaissance style, which is characterized by pronounced religiosity and intricate decoration, it is often considered as a precursor to the Baroque. The main three-story building with a balustrade on the sides is framed by two towers 35 meters high. The length of the facade is emphasized by the horizontal balcony line of the second floor. Of the interior of the palace, the Blue Salon, the Royal Chambers of Isabelle II, decorated in 1858, should be noted. In 1937, bomb shelter No. 64, designed by the architect Mario López, was built under the building.
Near the pedestal, where the guardrail of the main staircase begins, is the "altitude mark zero", which is the reference height of sea level for all regions of Spain.
