Fortress San Fernando is located on the San Francisco hill of Mount Tossal, almost in the center of Alicante. It was built during the War of Independence to protect the city from Napoleon's army, but the French never reached Alicante, the troops were transferred to invade Russia.

In 1809, the project of the castle was completed, and in 1812 the construction was already completed. The work was led by military engineer Pablo Ordovas Sastre (future commander of the Catalan army). The fortress consists of two bastions: the northern one, which has the shape of a complex polygon, and the southern one, now known as "El Yougurt", built in the form of a truncated cone. The bastions are interconnected by passage walls, along which the defenders of the fortress could move. In addition, five more semi-bastions were erected on the slopes of the mountain in the most vulnerable places, and a deep protective ditch was dug at the foot. Inside the fortress there is a capacious bunker in which the defenders could hide from artillery fire, drinking water tanks, powder and weapons cellars, provisions storages and military barracks.
Currently, on the mountain next to the fortress there is a large park with sports and playgrounds, jogging and roller tracks, mini-golf, football field.
