The Basilica of St. Mary is a Gothic church of the late XIV century, which consists of a single nave, without a cross, with a side arrangement of chapels between the buttresses. This oldest Catholic church in the city was erected in honor of the victory over the Moors on the site of a Muslim mosque.

The temple consists of several halls, which over time joined the original building. At the end of the 16th century, a side chapel of the Immaculate Conception was added, which has a rectangular shape and a coffered vault - the first example of Renaissance architecture in the city. And at the end of the 16th and at the beginning of the 17th century - other chapels from the side of Vila Vella.
Later, during the XVIII century, the temple underwent reconstruction and was significantly expanded. Several more buttresses and an altar chapel were erected. In the 18th century, the Chapel of the Sacrament, the New Sacristy, the Capitular Hall and the chapels on the left side of the temple received their current form. The interior of the church has also undergone transformations - a new rococo altar, images, stucco decorations and an organ appeared. In 1721, the restoration of the main facade, made in the Baroque style, was completed. Through these changes, the original austerity and simplicity of the Middle Ages were replaced by the joyful revival of the Renaissance period.
