roman bridge

Puente Romano
Spain, Cordoba
The Roman bridge in Cordoba was built and named after the 45 BC. Battle of Munda (the territory of modern Spain), as a result of which Gaius Julius Caesar began to rule the Roman Empire as a dictator. The bridge connected Cordoba with the port cities of the Mediterranean, across the Guadalquivir River, which flows in the south of the city. The bridge, 247 meters long and 7 meters wide, was built on wide stone pillars separated by 16 arches.

After the capture of this area by the Arabs in the first half of the 8th century, the bridge was rebuilt by them. The Arabs built the Calahorra watchtower at the southern end of the bridge, which has now become one of the symbols of Cordoba. After the reconquest of the Iberian Peninsula by the Spaniards, the bridge again underwent changes. In the northern part of the bridge, in the 16th century, an entrance gate was built through the fortress wall to the city center, and in the 17th century, a monument was erected in the central part of the bridge to the patron saint of Cordoba, the archangel Raphael. Now the bridge is completely pedestrian, there are guided tours on it and all its buildings.

The marble bridge over the Guadalquivir in Cordoba was built by the Romans over 2000 years ago, I was lucky enough to walk along it in the late 70s of the last century. Its condition was unimportant, the marble was short-lived and not very suitable for transport facilities, but that bridge had a significant advantage - it was genuine! Nearby, on the Guadalquivir embankment, there was a place where the narrator (Prosper Mé rimé e) in the autumn of 1830 met a depraved thief and robber named Carmen.
