Palace of the Dukes of Infantado

Palacio del Infantado, Palacio del Infantado, Mendoza Palace
Spain, Guadalajara
The Mendoza family, originating from the village of Mendoza in the province of Alava, is considered one of the most important and influential in the history of Spain. In 1475, one of the family members received the title of Duke del Infantado and in the same year he began the construction of the luxurious palace del Infantado in Guadalajara, which was built in 1485.
Palacio del Infantado (Palace of the Mendoza family, Palacio de los Duques del Infantado) is the main attraction in Guadalajara.
It is the first building to be built on the local architectural tradition without the direct influence of Italian designs. The mixture of Western and Eastern forms (Gothic and Mudéjar style) gave the facade of the palace, devoid of a clear plastic organization, the impression of arbitrariness. The two-tiered courtyard-patio and the facade of the palace itself are decorated with intricate decor. Inside the gallery with lions and arches is very interesting. In the front part of the palace there is a statue of Cardinal Mendoza.
The palace is located on Plaza de los Caidos en la Guerra Civil, 13. During the Civil War in 1936, the palace was badly damaged due to bombing. The fire destroyed most of the interior decoration. Now the building houses the local museum of local lore with an archaeological collection (Museo Provincial). Entrance to the palace is free, although this includes visiting only the courtyard, the treasures of the palace itself are available from the city's travel and excursion bureau for 5 euros, the tour can last two hours or longer. Opposite the Palacio del Infantado is the central tourist office in Guadalajara, it is also worth walking from the square along calle Mayo street to get to the Church of Santiago (Iglesia de Santiago).

I have been planning to visit Guadalajara for a long time. Now it is a bedroom suburb of Madrid. The city was catastrophically damaged during the Civil War, when the line of defense of the republican Madrid passed here. If we say "before / after the War", then they mean the Great Patriotic War, for the Spaniards it is the Civil War! I rode "for good luck", not deciding on the return. At the Guadalajara train station, the first thing I looked at was the schedule - trains back to Madrid only in the evening! Just in case, I asked the pretty girl in the ticket window if there was a day train? - Yes, it turns out there is, probably on the occasion of Sunday.
